A lot of people are struggling with the idea of legalizing the marijuana plant, but it is no surprise to see Alabama at the forefront. Though the state has always had a reputation for being a conservative one, Alabama has had a very recent history of progressivism in regards to drug laws.
There was a time when people thought the use of marijuana was a sign of weakness and a sign of an unhealthy mind. However, they were proven wrong when more and more research was done and showed that marijuana was a very helpful medical aid.
Governor Kay Ivey signed the Compassionate Use Act (SB 46) into law, making Alabama the 36th state to do so. State legalizes cannabis for medical use. The Compassionate Care Act passed the legislature with two-thirds support. This bill would allow registered patients with eligible medical conditions in Alabama to safely access and use medical cannabis recommended by their physicians. Medical cannabis will be available to patients in the form of tablets, lozenges, oils and patches. A summary of the bill can be found here. This is an important step forward for the people of Alabama, the congressman said. Instead of facing arrests and criminal penalties for using medical cannabis, this new law allows patients with illnesses and conditions to safely use and access medical cannabis, a treatment option available to so many of their fellow Americans. We commend the Legislature for passing and Governor Ivey for signing the Compassionate Care Act. Effective medical cannabis laws have now been passed in 36 states, including several southern states such as Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana and now Alabama. (Mississippi is no longer on the list. Earlier this month, the Mississippi Supreme Court made a deeply flawed decision by overturning Amendment 65, the medical cannabis law that was overwhelmingly approved by voters in the November 2020 election).
