Over the past few months, I’ve been doing some reading on. . .well, I’ve been doing some reading on “off-limits” foods. These foods are foods that are considered unhealthy to eat, but many people still eat them. These foods have become so ingrained in the American culture that they are seen as the norm, and turning away from them is seen as weird.
“Off-limits” foods are often the foods we believe will help us lose weight more quickly, but they can do more harm than good. They contain more calories, which is a major factor in weight gain. The foods you should avoid on a weight loss diet: processed foods, sweets, sugary drinks, trans fats, and highly processed oils, such as canola, corn, and soybean oil.
I LOVE Cool Whip. Cookies & Cream, Cherry, and Rainbow Sherbet are among my favorite flavors, and I eat the stuff by the spoonful. But I’m also a big believer in “clean eating”, which means steering clear of products that have questionable ingredients, but Cool Whip and not so much.
Have you ever been told that a certain meal is off-limits? I’ve done so.
When I was ten years old, my mother would purchase Cool Whip to create a “special” dessert for a holiday or birthday. Perhaps you’ve heard of it.
Like any 10-year-old, I asked whether I could eat it as soon as I spotted it in the fridge. “No, I’m keeping it for guests,” she quickly said. “Don’t touch it!” says the narrator.
Darn it.
I couldn’t get Cool Whip out of my mind any longer. It’s akin to Homer Simpson’s “Land of Chocolate.” Except I was in the “Cool Whip Land.”
I begged my mother to help me. She remained firm in her refusal.
I told her about my Cool Whip strategy: when I was old enough to drive, I’d go to the store and purchase my own tub of Cool Whip. Then I’d be able to consume the whole meal.
She was underwhelmed. She didn’t seem to be paying attention to my Cool Whip ideas. She was preoccupied in preparing sweets for her visitors.
Since my sister was older and had her driver’s license earlier, I recruited her in the scheme.
Now fast ahead four years…
The wonderful day has finally come! My sister is a capable driver! We hadn’t forgotten about our Cool Whip bargain, and we headed straight to the store to get our tubs. Freedom!! This was going to be incredible!!
But, guess what?
I just took two bites and decided I didn’t want any more.
How is it possible?
I believe it’s because I suddenly have access to the whole Cool Whip freezer section. It was no longer forbidden territory.
Furthermore, I discovered that Cool Whip wasn’t all that tasty. Only when I performed the “no one is looking Cool Whip finger scoop” – straight from the container — did it taste nice. Pathetic.
Needless to say, I haven’t given Cool Whip a second thought in years.
Foods that are prohibited
Would the same thing have occurred if my mother had forbidden me from eating pomegranates? Isn’t it possible to use pinto beans? I’m not entirely sure.
I do know that when I see individuals get infatuated with a certain meal and then totally devour it, it’s because they’ve placed it off limits.
Maybe they placed themselves on a pizza-free diet. So, what are they looking for? Pizza. What do they do in the end? I’m consuming much too much pizza. What happens to them for the rest of their life (assuming the diet was well-planned and followed)? Pizza is what they want to eat. What happens to their fitness and weight-loss goals? Their physique, on the other hand, seems to have been fed a lot of pizza.

Isn’t it terrifying?
Obviously, we must be aware of the meals with which we may maintain sanity. Some meals should be left undigested for as long as possible, and they are different for everyone. For additional information, see Good vs. Too Good.
What if we entered each day with the mindset that we could eat anything we wanted?
What if we included all of our favorite meals into our daily meal rotation?
Would we want to eat too much of them? Would they be as appealing?
Consider the following questions:
Do you have any foods that you don’t eat? Why?
Is there a risk of relapse into binge eating?
Is this assisting you in meeting your health and body composition objectives?
Is it preferable to simply go out and get some Cool Whip and then be disappointed?
It will teach you the optimal diet, exercise, and lifestyle methods that are specific to you.
There are many foods that are called off-limits—the ones that are said to cause overeating and unwanted weight gain.
