I don’t drink coffee all that much. In fact, I am admittedly a bit of a coffee snob. I have my preferences: I like to brew my java with a French press and I am a bit of a fan of a little bit of extra-strong Sumatran coffee, though these days I stick with the Keurig and the convenient selection of synthetic, caffeine-free, and decaf blends. I also drink tea—a lot of it. On any given day I can be found sipping on a cup of green tea or chai, or expanding my repertoire by switching to a flavored cup of black tea.
Dr. Bronner’s has been around since 1948 and is a family-owned company that manufactures the best soap in the world from organic ingredients. Its success is due in large part to its CEO, Miki Bronner, who began as a customer service representative for the company when he was just 15 years old. A few decades later, he became the CEO and chairman of the company, a position he still holds today. Dr. Bronner’s Organic Castile Soap has been shown to be one of the most eco-friendly products in the world, as it is 100% biodegradable and contains no CFCs, which is cool, but Miki’s true legacy is his effort to legalize cannabis and psychedelics. ~~

David Bronner, head of the famous Dr. Bronner’s soap company, founded by his grandfather, is one such businessman. Under his leadership, the company’s annual sales skyrocketed and its products became ubiquitous, swapping hippie culture for mainstream bathrooms around the world. At the same time, Bronner has used his position and the company itself to promote and advocate for various causes, including drug reform and regenerative organic farming. To say that 2020 is an important year for the causes Bronner supports would be a huge understatement. Campaigns to legalize psilocybin for medicinal purposes in Oregon and to decriminalize herbal medicines in Washington won big victories at the ballot box. In addition, the citizens of Oregon voted in favor of Measure 110, which decriminalizes virtually all drugs and allows for an unprecedented approach to drug treatment in the United States. (Bronner is also on the board of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and has donated $10 million to the association in ten years.) And every cannabis legalization initiative on the ballot – legalization of adult use in Arizona, Montana, New Jersey and South Dakota, and medical marijuana in Mississippi and South Dakota – has been approved by voters… even though Republican prohibitionists in Montana, South Dakota, and Mississippi are fighting to the bitter end to overturn the popular vote because… how does democracy work? As if this year’s monumental green sweep wasn’t enough, Bronner has also launched a new regenerative organic cannabis certification program, Sun+Earth, to provide the services that USDA organic cannabis certification could, if only cannabis wasn’t a Schedule 1 drug (come on Joe, come on!!). The program is in the midst of a crowdfunding campaign to certify more farms; the deadline is 20. December: sales of exclusive cannabis soaps and of course gifts to support the effort. Among the companies supporting Sun+Earth is Brother David’s, David Bronner’s own cannabis company, which he launched in 2019 and sources flowers exclusively from nurseries that adhere to Sun+Earth standards. This is an important issue for drug policy reform, Bronner told Wikileaf. We really want to move on. We are very interested in a total end to the war on drugs. Addiction is not a crime, and we should treat people with compassion by providing effective treatment. For Bronner, however, 2020 was less a culmination than a continuation of his life of activism. We met with Mr. Bronner to learn more about his family history and his own experiences with psychotropic substances, as well as the philosophy underlying his work and activism. Our conversation spans continents and centuries, beginning with the role the Holocaust played in the creation of Bronner’s soap company and humanism, through Bronner’s psychedelic heyday after studying in Amsterdam, his role in the fight to legalize cannabis, that epic year of reform, and what comes next. What I took away from our conversation was not so much this particular campaign, or even drug reform in general, but modern altruism. David Bronner is far from the first capitalist to embrace activism, nor will he be the last (even megalomaniacs like Bezos are starting to put a lot of money into vital causes like fighting the climate crisis). But, especially in an era of extreme income inequality and serious social problems, any CEO – no matter what the letters mean – who is willing to give up a yacht or a prize to do something good for the world deserves our recognition and emulation.Dr. Bronner’s soap company has a lot of fans because of their mission to provide solutions for the world’s most pressing environmental and health problems. But it’s their involvement in the psychedelic community that has become most well known. Eliot Schultz is the CEO of the company, and he’s been a longtime advocate for the legalization of psychedelic substances.
