John & Shannon are a husband and wife team, both highly experienced in their field. John is a Certified Health Coach and a health and fitness instructor, and Shannon is a registered dietitian. After consulting with John, Shannon took on the role of coach for his personal health and well-being. Shannon was halfway through her PhD when they began Coaching in January 2010. John was balancing a full-time job as a patent attorney with night school.

They were the epitome of a pair that claimed they “didn’t have time” to exercise or eat well.

Despite this, after just six months of commitment and no significant lifestyle changes, John had dropped 40 pounds and Shannon had lost 17.

Both John and Shannon felt more energized during the day, slept better at night, and were able to keep up with their busy, rewarding lives while also improving their relationship.

John & Shannon’s Transformation


By the time you read this, John and Shannon will have lived in the same home for precisely one month, a dream they’ve had since their June 2011 wedding.

The controlled chaos of their separate lives will collide and time will slow down when they wake up next to one other that first morning, before they prepare breakfast or walk out the home door — he to a law office, she to UPenn for PhD research.

They’ll enjoy their first genuine morning together as husband and wife, sharing a home.

But, as has been the case for the last five years, it’s all about hustling, hustle, hustle. They’ll continue to travel the three hours across state borders every week for the next month to see one other.

They’ll speak about job, education, future goals, and maybe even about that moment a year ago when they completely changed their bodies in six months and lost almost 60 pounds collectively.


The wedding day of John and Shannon

1 a.m., December 2009. Washington, DC is the capital of the United States.

John is unable to sleep.

Although he is unaware of it, his mind is running a mile a minute, bouncing from idea to thought, a sign of high evening cortisol.

All John knows is that it’s been tough for him to fall asleep since he began law school three and a half years ago. Every night, he gets around six hours of sleep, depending on how long it takes him to fall asleep. Even thinking about sleep may be exhausting for him.

Long hours in the workplace and classroom have other consequences than poor sleep. His physique has also taken a blow. He had an athletic physique with strong arms that strained his shirt sleeves when he started law school in 2006. The only portion of his shirt that extends now is the area around his stomach.

He’s gained around 40 pounds.

Law students are prone to gaining weight and having sleep issues. If you don’t put in the effort during your first few years, your prospects of landing a summer job at a renowned legal firm — and perhaps a profitable position with that firm after graduation — are low.

So, like everyone else, you get pulled into the competitive atmosphere of 80-hour work weeks and caffeine addiction.

John, on the other hand, is nearing the end of his ordeal. He’s nearing the end of his studies, with just one semester remaining. When you add in his present position with a prestigious company in Washington, DC, he’s in good shape.

What’s the cherry on top? He just proposed to his three-year girlfriend. When he went down on one knee, he made sure that both of their families were there. Shannon was on the verge of collapsing when everyone sprang up and screamed, “Surprise!” They all enjoyed a lovely supper that night, and John and Shannon posed for a number of pictures.

And, if he’s being totally honest, it’s those pictures that are preventing John from sleeping tonight. They’re evidence that he hasn’t paid attention to his health.

He understands it’s time to take care of himself and restore order now that the wedding is coming and his foot has finally come off the accelerator pedal. He just does not know where to begin.

He groans and turns over, his gaze falling on the alarm clock. 1:14.

This is going to be a long night.


Before Coaching, John and Shannon

1 a.m., December 2009. Philadelphia is a city in Pennsylvania.

Shannon is dozing off.

She’s been able to flop down on a sofa and be out in minutes since she was a child. It’s a present that makes her fiancé envious.

She, too, needs rest. Her days are jam-packed with studying, meetings, writing, and research in her second year of the PhD program at UPenn.

All of her duties have recently taken their toll on her. She hasn’t been as motivated as usual. Her study is being completed, but she’s been bored and perhaps sad. It’s difficult to maintain a long-distance relationship, particularly when you’re engaged. She pines for John.

She’s eating a bit more and moving a little less as a result of it all. Her clothing are becoming more constrictive. Her body isn’t the same as it used to be.

She played Division 3 soccer and basketball as an undergrad, but today the only baskets she shoots are crumpled pieces of paper into the trash can. It’s not the same thing.

Shannon, on the other hand, is a problem solver. (You don’t spend 7+ years in school without learning how to solve issues.)

Before going to night, she made a mental note to inform John about Coaching, an online nutrition coaching program that will begin in January.

She’d decided to join up first thing in the morning. And maybe, she reasoned as she climbed into bed, John would want to do it as well.

Friday afternoons are pure freedom, since they mark the beginning of a weekend free of school, job, and worry. It’s a short vacation.

 Coaching began a few months ago, and John and Shannon have settled into a comfortable routine in each other’s company, putting their new exercise and eating habits to the test.

Saturday is dedicated to interval training. They get up early, typically before the sun rises, and do treadmill sprints in the empty gym side by side. The remainder of the day is wonderful free time, full of discussion, great meals, movies, and frequently simply hours on the sofa snuggling.

They take turns pulling a shopping cart on Sundays, filling it with fresh produce, lean meats, and natural peanut butter. (Peanut butter is a favorite of theirs.) They chop, cook, consume peanut butter with a spoon, then divide the meal into separate Tupperware containers when they get home. The meals will last them three days apiece, which will come in handy when they don’t have time to prepare throughout the week.

Before Shannon drives back to school on Sunday afternoon, they get a camera and a measuring tape and record how many inches and pounds they’ve dropped.

John will point to the still-life picture of Shannon on the digital camera and remark, “Look at your stomach.” “Wow, you have killer abs!”

Shannon will blush as she grabs John’s strong arms, taking pictures of him and marveling at how beautiful he looks.

Then it’ll be another couple of hours, a kiss on the lips, a lengthy farewell embrace, and then it’ll be back to work.

Even though it is just 8 a.m., the school gym is filled with college students. Shannon weaves her way through the throng, past the ellipticals, and into the weight room.

Shannon used to believe that weightlifting was just for men until she began coaching. She avoided becoming bulky by sticking to jogging and other kinds of exercise.

However, she has bulked up in the past six months of working out with weights. Her slim body has lost 17 pounds and has defined muscle and beautiful curves.

She goes by the pull-up bar at the gym, then doubles back to it. She looks at the bar with a puzzled expression on her face, as if to say, “What is this?” What exactly is this? Of course, it’s a test.

She leaps to the bar and takes it with both hands, palms facing her. She just hangs there for a few seconds, softly swinging.

Then she easily squeezes the bar tight and pushes her body to the top. She had just completed her very first…chin-up.

She sits down on the floor and takes a look around. She then returns to the locker area, picks up her phone, and messages John.

With a grin on her face, she writes, “Guess what I just done…”

The gym is deserted at 10:15 p.m. When the gym is empty, John enjoys it.

He’s had a long and eventful day. He went to work at nine o’clock, got off at five o’clock, and immediately proceeded to night school, which had just ended fifteen minutes before.

It is now his turn.

He switched off his Blackberry as soon as he stepped inside the gym doors. There will be no phone calls, meetings, or worry.

He takes a pair of dumbbells and loads a barbell. The advantage of exercising at night is that you won’t have to fight for space or equipment with anybody else. John sweats profusely as he pushes himself through his exercise, his muscles tight. He’s lost 40 pounds since starting Coaching six months ago.

At this precise moment, John has more vitality than three guys put together. He’d been missing this sensation. And he’s been missing this body a lot. He puts the weights away, throws a sweaty towel in the trash, and goes out the gym doors into the cold night 30 minutes later. He’ll get a nice night’s sleep tonight.

He opens his Blackberry to find a text message from Shannon waiting for him.

It asks, “How was your workout?”

He presses the “call” button and holds the phone to his ear.

He’s eager to hear her speak.

Shannon and John are still committed to their healthy lifestyle almost two years after they began coaching.

They believe in the need of holding people accountable. They have faith in one another.

Shannon adds, “I don’t believe we would have achieved the same level of success if we hadn’t done Coaching together.” “Who knows what we could have done if we had lived in the same home at the same time.”

Despite the fact that they were in different states, they were always in the same frame of mind. Whatever occurred, they made time for themselves, no matter how hectic their lives became.

Although it will be another month before they are permanently reunited, John and Shannon are certain that they will have many more years of excellent health, fitness, and love ahead of them.
