I am a mother of two and have been fat and happy for almost all of my life. I started to notice that my weight kept creeping up in my early 30s, and each time I would go to my doctor, the news got worse and worse. Eventually, I was diagnosed with PCOS, a condition in which your body produces too many androgens, which are hormones associated with male and female traits. The PCOS diagnosis and treatment is very challenging with no cure, but I learned a few tricks that helped me lose weight.

Have you heard the new fad diet craze that is sweeping the world? It’s a low-carb, high-fat diet, and you should have heard about it by now: It’s called low carb, high fat, or keto. You may have heard that keto is the new low-carb diet, but what do you really know?

We are very excited to share with you the story of another follower, Alesa! Her journey began after developing cholestasis (liver disease) and gestational diabetes during her pregnancy.

According to the American Diabetes Association, women with gestational diabetes are seven times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes after pregnancy. This knowledge, combined with a family history of type 2 diabetes, prompted Alesa to change her eating habits in an effort to prevent the disease.

How did you discover keto?

I am now 31 years old and started this journey in April 2019 because I am at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Health problems can affect anyone, but complications during pregnancy and a family history of type 2 diabetes put me at increased risk of developing the disease.

I have been taking care of myself for over a year now following the Keto system and have been able to see firsthand how I can live this way. Not only am I healthier, but my bloating has disappeared, my digestion has improved, I have more energy and less appetite! I can eat what I like without ever feeling deprived.

How easy is this diet to incorporate into your lifestyle?

When I started the keto diet, I thought my food choices were so limited. I didn’t know there was one. I now know that there are great keto substitutes for almost all of my favorite foods that are also healthy. This lifestyle is easy because you never have to be hungry or restrict yourself!

Were there any difficulties on your path to keto?

My family doesn’t understand keto and constantly points out how stupid they think it is. I created my Instagram page to connect with people who feel the same way I do.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

For me, lifestyle change is not about drastic weight loss or having a perfect body. In fact, the weight difference in the photos above is only about 10 pounds!

For me, the keto diet is a way to live my life to the fullest and be healthy. Besides all the physical benefits of the keto diet, I love the feeling I get when acquaintances or old friends tell me they chose the keto diet because of me. ❤️

I can’t decide on my favorite recipe – there are too many! As far as products go, I’m loving the Quest Hero bars right now.

Any advice for others on a keto diet?

Don’t give up! The first two weeks are the hardest. Once you realize how much better your body feels without carbs and sugar, you’ll never want to go back! I didn’t just start a diet …. I made the decision to change my relationship with food forever – a new way of living.

I’m not going to lie and say it was easy. The first month I missed my usual food. But as the days passed, my thoughts went from I can’t have it to I don’t want it. I can now say without hesitation that switching to keto was one of the best decisions I ever made!
