Melissa is a student at the University of California Riverside studying to become an occupational therapist. She also serves as the President of the Student Health and Counseling Services Organization, a group that helps at-risk students navigate the health services at UCR. Up until recently Melissa was a pretty typical college student. She was outgoing, engaged in campus life, and worked out on a regular basis, but she had a secret eating disorder. She binge ate on her birthday, when she was stressed, or when she was bored.

Melissa was a very active individual – she wanted to be in shape, she wanted to feel good about herself, and she wanted to be a role model for others. She was on track to accomplish all of these things. She ate healthy foods, worked out regularly and was active in her community. She was still, however, unhappy with her body. She had always struggled with her weight, she was often embarrassed to wear certain types of clothing because of her rolls of fat, and she was always ready for a diet and exercise plan to make her feel better about her body.

Melissa’s life is like most people’s. She has been married to her husband for three years, has two children, and works as a server at a local restaurant. When Melissa Howell joined Coaching, she anticipated to lose weight. She did drop weight, a whopping 55 pounds, just in time for her wedding.

But she didn’t anticipate the benefits: more confidence, increased self-awareness, and a new identity as a fit and healthy person. (As a finalist in the Coaching competition, she also won $10,000.)

Melissa’s Life Changes

The month of February 2010

Melissa Howell admits, “I was a loser.” “Not at all. “It was me.”

Is he a loser? That’s hard to believe coming from a former Division One basketball star and a graduate of the renowned Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

“OK, so I was a love winner,” she admits. After all, she’d had the good fortune to meet (and the foresight to select) a man who got her and loved her for who she was.

There was only one little snag. She was dissatisfied with herself.

Not only that, but the cosmos didn’t seem to think much of her either.

Take her work life, for example. Melissa had been looking for a job in her profession for over a year, despite having significant creative talent and a fancy degree to show it.

“And what was I doing?” says the narrator. I was working on a kitsch project. Snow globes, magnetic salt-and-pepper shakers, and resin figurines of wiener dogs in amusing costumes. I wasn’t being paid well, and the job was draining my soul.”

That wasn’t the end of it. She was also very overweight.

Actually, it was a lot worse. She was on the verge of becoming fat.

It wasn’t always like this.

Melissa used to be slim and fit. She could lift 150 pounds and sprint for hours on a basketball court.

She could hardly run a mile in ten minutes at the age of 31.

Despite this, she felt helpless to intervene.

She admits, “I tried going to the gym.” “My boyfriend and I would go on treadmills next to each other and begin running. We’d do this for about a half hour before leaving. “It’s not really inspiring.”

As a result, they began training in Muay Thai in a gym close to her workplace. Melissa felt a bit better about herself after the courses since they were enjoyable. It seemed like progress only to put forth some effort. Even yet, the numbers on the scale didn’t seem to be improving much.

And she had her doubts about whether things would ever change.

Was that all there was to it? Was this all she could hope for in life?

Then, in June of 2011, her luck changed for the better.

Melissa first applied for and was hired for a much better (and higher-paying) job after receiving a tip from a friend. Playdom is a business that makes those addicting small social media games that help people pass the time during long workdays.

Yes, she’d continue to create kitsch. She’d be working digitally today, however. She has the potential to be more inventive. In the business, there was opportunity for advancement. And the benefits were fantastic: free Disney passes.

Her days as a dog had come to an end. Things were starting to look up.

She began working on Monday. Then, on Wednesday, she received an invitation from to join the Coaching presale list in an email from.

Melissa wasn’t new to PN; in fact, she’d purchased a copy of the PN System in 2007. In 2008, she had even signed up for Coaching.

She wasn’t in a position to follow through at the time, since she was still a student with a part-time job and other obligations, as well as a thesis to finish. She’d withdrew from the program because she couldn’t afford it, and the book had collected dust on her shelf.

She realized she had the money now that she had a new job. Her financial situation didn’t have to limit her.

She was also driven by a strong desire. Because, after a meal at their favorite restaurant on Friday of that fateful week, Melissa’s boyfriend, Derek, proposed to her.

He went down on one knee right next to their table and proposed.

Waiters brought champagne and took pictures. Melissa later recognized that her appearance didn’t reflect how she felt on the inside after looking at the photos.

And she realized that now was the moment to commit to Coaching. She wanted to appear like the joyful person she was becoming on her wedding day.

“Have a compelling reason.”

Melissa now encourages you to do so. It’s one of the reasons she thinks she did well in the program.

“State your case. Keep your objective in mind. She warns, “Don’t lose sight of it.” “I had this picture of myself on my wedding day in my mind the entire time, striding tall, feeling great – statuesque rather than squishy around the edges.”

But, as much as she concentrated on external improvements at first — losing weight and getting in shape so she could look great on her wedding day — it wasn’t long before she recognized that her coaching journey would be about so much more.

A month into the program, she reflected in her diary, “I feel like I’m making better choices.” “I have sufficient energy to conquer the whole world.”

She was juggling a lot of things at the time: a new job, new housing arrangements, wedding preparations, and new diet and fitness regimens. Rather of collapsing under the pressure, as she had in the past, or overeating to cope, she was pushing herself to face these new difficulties.

She adds, “It’s not only about what you see in the mirror; it’s about how you feel on the inside.”

And she was ecstatic, resolute, optimistic, and proud on the inside. She is pleased with her efforts. She is pleased with her accomplishments. She hadn’t felt like that in a very long time.

Melissa had dropped a healthy 33 pounds after six months of coaching.

She went shopping for her wedding gown as a way to commemorate the occasion. The trip was a lot more enjoyable than she had expected. She knew it was “the one” when the fourth dress she tried fit exactly and looked beautiful.

She’d lost 51 pounds by April, and it was clear that the dress would need to be taken in a couple of inches on the sides.

Not only that, but she’d shrunk by a whole ring size. It would be necessary to resize her engagement ring.

Fortunately, there was still time to make such adjustments. Melissa couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw her progress pictures.

What had allowed this to happen?

It wasn’t the workout, though that was excellent. It improved her mood and energy levels by making her endorphins dance.

But, more importantly, Melissa saw that Coaching had altered her relationship with food.

“Food used to be a source of solace. I used to fill my face to make myself feel better, or to make myself feel worse.”

Melissa had been relying on food to validate her low self-esteem.

But now she was pleased with herself. Her urge to eat to console herself and punish herself had vanished.

“Now I view food for what it is: a source of energy for my body. And now that I’ve reclaimed my athletic body, I need to provide it with the appropriate nutrition to keep it operating properly. Fast food is no longer something I like. It makes me sick just by smelling it. “I have a strong desire for broccoli.”

She adds, “I never imagined I’d be pleased to be a health freak.” “However, I am.”

Furthermore, she had discovered that even self-proclaimed health freaks may enjoy a little indulgence now and again.

She could now enjoy her favorite sweets guilt-free and without regret, due to Coaching.

She wrote, “I can do one cookie instead of four, and guess what, I can live without one!”

“I don’t think it’s necessary for me to eat dessert after every meal. My dessert is life!”

New objectives and ideals have been established.

Melissa had dropped a lot of weight and spent a lot of time thinking about her objectives and beliefs by May of 2011.

She was astonished at how ingrained some of the teachings were in her mind.

She said, “I used to be an athlete, and all of my screen identities reflected that.” “AirKochie, MelHoops,” says AirKochie. Something along those lines.”

“Then, in recent years, I’ve been concentrating more and more on my work, and my names have changed to Artist Channeling the Muse, MelissaKochArt, and MeliArt.”

She had rediscovered her inner athlete thanks to Coaching. But it was the manner the software had confirmed her identity as an artist that astonished her the most.

“Dammit, I’m cleaning up my sketching table at home and getting back to work on my own artwork!” Why? Because the LE teachings demonstrated that it would be beneficial to my soul.”

She’d realized she was both an athlete and an artist. It’s not a case of one or the other, but of both. Melissa took the uncommon step of changing her screen name to Arthlete in order to represent her new sense of self.

She solidified that brand by creating a logo for her Coaching team.

She added, “It seems only fitting as this round of coaching comes to a conclusion.” “I’m nervous about tomorrow since I won’t have to log in, enter my measurements, or receive that check mark.”

“But I’ll keep getting those check-marks in my head,” she continued. “Every time I refuse a doughnut or a scone in favor of a handful of vegetables. Every time I leave the table pleased but not content, and every time I go all out in the gym.”

“Life is wonderful, life is fantastic. And now I’m one of them!”

From loser to champion

Melissa is no longer the angry and disappointed person she was when she first started the program.

“Now I’m sure of myself. I like being active. I like eating healthy, natural foods. “I love cooking and shopping for clothes,” she adds.

“Coaching has totally altered my view on life, fitness, nutrition, and how to approach my present job. I’m brimming with fresh creative zeal.”

She’s also giving back by acting as a mentor to a new group of Coaching clients and studying for her PN Certification.

“I want to establish some kind of fitness program here at my workplace (the building has a gym) and maybe take on some private customers as well,” she adds.

It’s always nice to have a destination in mind, but in the end, it’s the trip that counts. Melissa wrote in her diary, citing Ursula K. LeGuin, the author.

She flashes a huge grin when she returns home from her honeymoon.

“And this trip has had a significant impact.”
